Hanabi beer bottles displayed in the Akin shop

THIRSTY THURSDAYS | Fireworks, Ferments & Shop-Girl Science: Hanabi Lager Co. Lands at Akin Cooperative

Sometimes I think the Las Vegas Arts District is a lot like a living sketchbook. Layers of color, texture, and personality shifting every time you walk through it. You can pop into a boutique, turn a corner, and suddenly find yourself face to face with something that makes you pause, smile, and think, Yep… this is why I love it here.

And that’s exactly how it felt when Emily from Alt Imports stepped into Akin with two beautifully designed 500ml bottles from Hanabi Lager Company. They stood there on the counter. Tall, mysterious, effortlessly cool, like they already knew they belonged in a space full of makers, dreamers, and people who care deeply about what goes into the things they consume.

And honestly?

They were right.

Because Hanabi Lager Co. isn’t just beer, it’s craftsmanship, art, and a tiny bit of brewing nerdery wrapped in the prettiest packaging you’ve ever seen.

Meet the Maker: Brewing as an Art Form

Hanabi Lager Company was created by a brewer who approaches beer the way an artist approaches a studio day, slowly, thoughtfully, and with a willingness to let the process shape the final masterpiece.

His “why” is simple and refreshingly earnest:

bring back the kind of lager that’s brewed with intention.

Not rushed.

Not trend-chasing.

Not overly hopped or dressed up.

Just crafted. With patience, precision, and respect for tradition.

He’s on a mission to remind people that lager isn’t “basic.” It’s actually one of the most technically demanding styles, like the pottery wheel at Akin: looks simple… until you try it.

The Labels: Fireworks, Ephemera, and a Touch of Magic

Hanabi means “fire flower” in Japanese, so each label pulls inspiration from fireworks, moments that exist for only a breath before transforming into memory.

The artwork is part science, part poetry.

Minimalist, but arresting.

Quiet, but charged with energy.

It’s the same spirit behind the beer itself: capturing a fleeting moment of perfection and bottling it, knowing it’ll never be exactly the same again.

The Two Bottles Currently Stealing the Spotlight at Akin

1. Hana -Pilsner-Style Lager

The elegant one.

The clean aesthetic in beer form.

Crisp. Floral. Balanced.

A Pilsner so refined it tastes like someone finally uncluttered their life.

“Hana” offers soft malt, delicate florals, and a finish that snaps like perfectly starched linen.

When the shop girls tried it, the collective reaction was basically:

“…oh, this is serious beer.”

2. San Juan Island Beer -Pilsner Style Lager #55

Now THIS is where the nerdy magic happens.

The Heritage Grain Behind “San Juan Island Beer” -Pilsner Lager #55

One of the coolest things about Hanabi,  and the thing that makes beer nerds weak in the knees,  is their commitment to heritage grains. These aren’t modern, hyper-engineered brewing grains. These are ancient or nearly-lost varieties, the OG grains used hundreds (sometimes thousands) of years ago, before industrial agriculture standardized everything.

And the grain in the San Juan Island Lager?

A heritage variety grown on the San Juan Islands,  one of the earliest grains cultivated for some of the first beers ever brewed.

This grain carries real history.

We’re talking:

  • older genetics

  • less modification

  • more nuance

  • regional flavor

  • actual agricultural lineage

It’s the kind of grain that basically says:

“Before humans figured out taxes or roads or the concept of ‘Monday,’ they were brewing beer with me.”

Hanabi’s brewer specifically loves these grains because they’re expressive. Modern grains are consistent, but heritage ones are like wine grapes. They tell you where they came from. Soil, climate, coastline, elevation, all of that ends up in the glass.

And in the case of the San Juan Island lager, the grain gives:

  • soft, round malt flavor

  • delicate sweetness

  • earthy depth

  • a subtle “fresh field” aroma

  • complexity without heaviness

It’s a Pilsner, but it tastes like it has a story.

Because it does.

Find Them at Akin Cooperative

Both of these beautifully crafted bottles are available now at Akin Cooperative, right here in the Las Vegas Arts District. They sit among handmade ceramics, small-batch makers, art, creativity, and the daily buzz of shop-girl energy.

Hanabi fits here, because it’s intentional, thoughtful, and made with heart.

Exactly like everything else inside Akin.

So if you’re wandering the Arts District and want to take home something delicious, interesting, and honestly kind of poetic, grab a Hanabi bottle.

These aren’t just beers.

They’re tiny fireworks waiting for their moment🎇
